This course has been prepared for training personnel involved in the marine transportation of refrigerated and frozen foods and temperature sensitive cargo in refrigerated containers and reefer vessels, and particularly for personnel working in terminal operations, logistics, technical sales, customer service, cargo underwriting and handling cargo claims.
Topics covered: Historical background. Types of refrigerated containers and ships. Container parts, cooling system, air exchange; transport parameters, control panel; thermographs and data loggers, electrical generators and connections, attachments. Introduction to reefer vessels. Control of insects and pests by cold treatment in transit. Notions of food preservation, plant tissue respiration, ethylene environmental control. Incompatibilities with other cargo. Cargo preparation, packaging and palletizing. Temperature control. Selection of optimal transport conditions (temperature, relative humidity, ventilation). Modified and controlled atmospheres. Instructions for transportation. Preparation of the unit and pre-cooling. Proper stuffing and stowage. Stripping and cargo transfer. Security seals. Review of operations in maritime terminals.
